"From the start, I have allowed my intuition and emotions to guide me through the entire process, just as I do with my photography and non-fiction writing. I bypass my rational process and with painting, I choose a brush and the size and shape of the paper that resonate with me and then I select pigment throughout the process that does as well. The colours and shapes then flow freely across the paper with the aid of water. No preplanning nor intending."
I grew up during the 50s and early 60s in Los Angeles in a family immersed in the world of Hollywood. I experienced that southern California culture to be obsessed with appearances, glamour and status. It was intensely superficial and materialistic and I didn't resonate with it at all. Throughout my youth I yearned for genuine connections and authenticity.
Nature and creativity became my refuge. I often escaped into the backyard of our West LA suburban home and sat on the cool grass under the shade of the big oak tree to feel grounded. Music and dance became early outlets of creative expression for me. At age 10 I began journaling, scribbling my thoughts and feelings onto the pages of my little blue diary which I closed with a lock and key. I took up photography in high school and began capturing images to help me try to make sense of the outer world.
My passion for writing and photography led me to pursuing journalism. Then seeking to find further visual expression for my inner world, I enrolled in the Vancouver School of Art (now Emily Carr University of Art and Design). and began exploring watercolor painting.
Due to the intense political turmoil I had experienced throughout the 60s, at the beginning of the next decade, after graduating from University at Berkeley, I immigrated to Canada. That first summer I attended a summer photography program at the Banff School of Fine Arts, and met Jim, also a artist, who four years later became my life partner.
"The emotions are sometimes so strong that I work without knowing it. The strokes come like speech." – Vincent van Gogh
I have continued to write, photograph and paint throughout my life in this same way and I find self-awareness and solace as I feel humbled and grateful as I watch my emotions transformed into works of art.
"I photograph with my outer eye, I paint with my inner eye, and I write from my heart." - Carol
